Post Possible Disembodied Voice
This morning, sometime around 5:00 AM I heard what I am starting to believe is a disembodied voice.

I may go into too much detail over the next few paragraphs but I do this because I am trying to cover all angles. Ive tried as scientifically as I can to figure out what caused what I heard and I am struggling. So:

I had fallen a sleep strangely early last night. around 8:30 PM. This is strange because being the typical college student, I am normally up until midnight, easy. The night before I was excessively restless so it at least makes sense that I would be tired enough to sleep. Unfortunately from around 11:00 PM onward I was restless again. Falling in and out of sleep, never really reaching that beautiful REM cycle.

For the last few months I have been sleeping with TV on. The sound is almost always muted or if it is on, its on its lowest level to where only a "hum" is heard. I also sleep with a fan. I do this for a few reasons, 1. I am normally a "dead" sleeper with a fan running and 2. The images on the TV provide a distraction should I suddenly wake up from a nightmare (silly I know, its like an adult "nightlight").

I will be the first person to admit I have an overactive imagination. I try my hardest to not dwell on any bad or scary thoughts because if I do, its like Ive opened my subconscious to a playground of all things capable of giving nightmares.

I feel compelled to say that I have a deep rooted fear of demons. Im not sure when it started (early church years and scary movies?) but if my mind wanders towards anything related to the "subject" I am doing all I can to change my mental picture. Obviously the worst time to think about it is at night and it is really amazing to me how at times my mind wants to keep thinking on the subject regardless of how hard I fight it (this has to sound like Im just crazy!).

Ok so all that said, it is around 5:00 AM, the TV is on with no volume, and I hear a deep, man's voice say "Hey". It was loud, defined and had a slight growl to it, like it was guttural. When it woke me, it didn't fear me as much as it confused me. I am a female and I live with my stepsister. We have no animals.

I looked up at the TV to see, Chuck Norris (haha) selling exercise equipment on an infomercial. I picked up the remote to check the volume, and realized there was no way it was his voice, 1. the volume was down and 2. when I turned the volume up, his voice was a completely different sound. So then, because it seemed guttural to me, I thought maybe one of my pillows that has a zipper case scraped up against the wall. I reenacted this, moving my pillows but the metal on drywall sound was different. I got up, moved around, went to the bathroom, but heard nothing like it again. From then on I could not sleep. I felt like I was being watched and even with the my TV distraction my mind began to wonder about where the voice came from and started to think of the "possibilities".

Ive had the feeling of being watched before, especially as a kid and Ive acknowledged the possibility of EMF's though Ive never actually found out if I am sensitive. I just assume its an overactive imagination.

If it was paranormal (and I am more than willing to rule it out as something else) I think I could handle things if I knew it was unrelated to demons.

I cannot say that I am horribly religious these days, but I am a spiritual person.

Ive not been involved in anything negative like Ouija boards nor have I read up on or studied anything on demons. The closest I get is a scary movies or TV show....

What do you think? Any other persons with experiences of hearing voices?

OH and I should probably say, this is the second or third time I have distinctly heard something. It has been in the same house (typical suburban home, built in the late 1980's) and its always been a male voice. Sadly I do not remember what was said last time, I believe it was something like "Don't Forget...". Although last time it was during the day and it was less guttural.

I've had a few experiences where I heard speaking, but most of the time it is more like hearing the words in my head. Have you ever experienced sleep paralysis?

Ive had vivid dreams where I cannot move or can only move exasperatingly slow.

I have not however, felt or been awake but unable to move.

I see you making the distinction between hearing the voice in your head vs. physically hearing the voice.

What have you heard? Was something speaking to you or did you hear something in general?

Good possibility if it were any other time of the year, but it was -3 degrees with snow. So IF someone was out and about at 5:00 AM I certainly wouldn't have heard them, since the window is firmly shut. Plus I live in a quiet neighborhood, in a suburb of Indianapolis... Not a whole lot of extra noise.

The sound I heard seemed close by too, as if it were next to me. If it wasn't paranormal or a voice then it had to come from my room...

If your stepsister has a history of paranormal experiences, certain people are often observed to stir up the supernatural wherever they go. She could be the one causing things to happen while you are just caught up in it. (Some believe that these people are psychic and accidentally causing the phenomenon themselves.)

Additionally, I don't know if you have lived with her you entire life, but she may be acting as a catalyst to awaken some latent sensitivity of your own.

Post Re: Possible Disembodied Voice
My stepsister does have a history with the paranormal...all members of her immediate family acknowledge that they lived with a ghost many years back. Often she and our stepfather were the ones who had the experiences.

I recently moved in with her, in October, and since then I have twice (maybe three times) heard the voice.

I spoke with her last night, and told her what had happened. She said that the same thing has happened to her. A similar sounding voice, that she said forcefully spoke her name "Renee!" (I changed her name). She said she woke right up, checked the the windows and doors...looked outside...but found nothing.

Ive shared some of this with MaskedFox already, but thought others might have some insight too.

My fear would be then, that she, or I, or the combination of us is or will attract something REALLY bad.

Of course, like I mentioned to MaskedFox, When I was 18, her dad died in a tragic accident. Every once in a while, when these things happen (voices, etc.) we joke and say its him. It might be possible that it is, but again I've not experienced anything else but a voice while in that house.

Post Re: Possible Disembodied Voice
Hi moe. I see you joined Discuss the Paranormal just yesterday. Welcome aboard. Though I'm a native Kentuckian, I've lived in Indianapolis, IN since 1986. There's another Hoosier on this forum named, "Finding Truth." So, it's a small world, isn't it? There are a lot of very nice people here with a lot of knowledge. I've had only positive communication experiences here. I'm sure I speak for most of us when I say we're all here to help one another through our shared knowledge and experiences. That having been said:

Moe, I feel it necessary to warn you that you are now swimming in some fairly dangerous, "mental waters," (for lack of a better expression). An experienced swimmer can swim where you are in relative safety. However, an inexperienced swimmer runs the risk of being washed out to sea without a life preserver. You mentioned that you are a college student. I'm presuming that you are young. It takes many years of study, training, practice and experience to be able to handle the sorts of, "energies," (again, for lack of a better expression) you are experiencing and describing here. Frankly, if you don't know what you're dealing with and how to handle it, then you run the risk of becoming mentally ill. If I may illuminate you with some essential knowledge, then maybe we can communicate more about specifics later.

Carl Jung did not like the Freudian term, "Subconscious." He thought that the prefix, "Sub-," implied something working either in cooperation with, or beneath the Conscious mind. Rather, Jung preferred the term, "Unconscious." He thought of the human mind as an automobile with two separate drivers (ie. the Conscious and Unconscious operating individually, and not always in cooperation with one another: in fact, often, in opposition to one another). In agreement with Jung, and for purposes of this discussion, I'll use the term, "Unconscious," for all mental activity that is not Conscious.

Contemporary Magician Frater U.:D.:, has given us a wonderful illustration of the human mind: 1) there is the Conscious, 2) there is the Unconscious, and 3) there is what he calls the, "Sensor." Enough has been written already about the Conscious and Unconscious minds that I don't think it is necessary to discuss it here, unless you need to know more about it. Just let me know. I'll happily oblige you. However, what is most important to you now, moe, is the, "Sensor." The, "Sensor," is a sort of veil, or barrier between the Conscious and the Unconscious minds. It might even be helpful to think of the, "Sensor," as a sentry whose job it is to keep what belongs in the Conscious in the Conscious, and what belongs in the Unconscious in the Unconscious. Now, what happens sometimes (often, as a matter of fact), is that the, "Sensor," becomes weakened. In effect, the Sentry falls asleep. The veil is rent. The barrier is permeated. When the, "Sensor," is weakened, then what normally resides in the Unconscious mind, is able to sneak through to the Conscious mind and vice-versa. This is not necessarily a bad thing, by the way. In Jungian terms, the Unconscious is where the, "True Self," resides: where the ego (the false self) keeps it imprisoned, as a matter of fact. This weakening of the, "Sensor," is what allows the, "True Self," to emerge. This emergence is what Jung referred to as the process of, "Individuation," which leads to, "Wholeness:" the reconciliation of the two selves---the, "True," and, "False," selves. It's just that, for many, it can feel quite creepy as the process evolves. There is a lot of scary stuff inside the Unconscious mind: things that, "the average European," would rather not address, as Jung put it. However, this inward expansion of consciousness is what offers the greatest potential for becoming, "Whole."

The Unconscious mind expresses itself in Symbols. These Symbols are often perceived by the Conscious mind as, "scary." These Symbols include Demons, by the way. What I think is happening with you, moe, is that your, "Sensor," is weakening and, resultantly, that, "scary stuff," which resides in your Unconscious mind, is beginning to raise itself to your Conscious mind for contemplation and analysis. Your Conscious mind is perceiving these Symbols, or, "scary stuff," as paranormal, or occult phenomena when, what is more likely the case, you are experiencing, "Sensory Hallucination," symptomatic of a weakened, "Sensor." At this point, you've got to be very careful. When the, "Sensor," weakens sufficiently that the, "True Self," is able to begin emerging, then there is a bit of a war that takes place between the two selves. The, "True Self," residing in the Unconscious mind, possesses everything that the, "False Self," (the Ego) residing in the Conscious mind struggles to keep concealed and wishes was dead. However, the, "True Self," insists on being acknowledged. These are two equally formidable opponents and you've got to make sure that neither of them wins. If the Conscious, "False Self," Ego wins, the result is egotism, selfishness, megalomania, etc. If the Unconscious wins, the result is Paranoid Schizophrenia. Remember, the goal is the Reconciliation of the Two Selves.

Perhaps to help you overcome your, "Deep-rooted fear of Demons:" I'm not saying that Demons do not exist as autonomous beings. I think it is entirely possible for them to exist as autonomous beings. It's just that I find 999 out of 1,000 Demons to be subjective mental constructs. Interestingly, the Unconscious mind dictates much of human behavior. I believe that Demons, among other Symbols, are the Unconscious mind's way of illustrating negative thoughts and thought patterns that dictate negative behaviors. For example, growing up, I had a very negative relationship with my father. One day, it dawned on me that, in romantic relationships, I always attracted and was always attracted to women who (except for gender) were, in effect, identical to my father, which always ended in horrendous disasters. The day I realized the reasons for my failures in romantic relationships, I went to bed that night and had a nightmare. In my nightmare, a four-foot tall, opaque, light-blue, fire breathing Demon that looked like a sea horse wrestled itself loose from my torso. It then hovered above my bed for a few moments, growled and spat fire at me and then sped off like a jet propelled rocket. Interestingly, my love life improved and no more Demon. Do you see what I mean?

Not to nose into your personal life, moe. But, you mentioned that you live with your stepsister. Therefore, I'm presuming that you are a member of a fragmented family. Women who lose their fathers---either through divorce, or death, etc.---especially if they lose their fathers during adolescence, often grow up with, "Abandonment Issues," that manifest themselves in all sorts of negative behaviors. It is possible that those Demons you fear so horribly might be your Unconscious mind illustrating to your Conscious mind some negative thoughts, thought patterns and resultant behaviors associated with your father. If so, I would be willing to wager that as you come to terms with issues pertaining to your father and start healing them, your Demons and fear of them will start going away.

I've got to get going, moe. Hope I've helped you. I bet we live pretty close to one another. I don't always have time to write at length as I've done today. But, if you feel comfortable PM-ing me (sending me a private message on this website) containing your contact information, I'd be happy to talk to you more about it in person. Good Luck!

Frater, I find all you have said to be extremely interesting. Though I admit I have not studied either to great lengths, I have always liked Jung’s work over Freud’s.

Frater Manifesto wrote:

Seems like the Ego is running the world currently…

Frater Manifesto wrote:

I am intrigued by your choice of words in this sentence. A psychic that I went to for help about 9 years ago told me that I was born with a weaker psychic barrier than most people. According to her, this barrier is what prevents most people from experiencing the supernatural. So I wonder if perhaps it was actually this “sensor” that is weaker than most in me.

I actually remember a point in high school when I for lack of a better term, fought with myself and swayed between paranoia and complete narcissism. During that time (four days to a week) I saw and heard a lot of strange things.

Hallucinations could certainly explain some of the things I have experienced, but other things have included other individuals. Additionally, I can think of nothing in my past that I particularly wish to lock away and never see again. I’ve spent long, and sometimes agonizing, hours going through my mind and reconciling different memories until they were no longer painful to recall.

So then by your information here, shouldn’t phenomenon have stopped?

Still, the whole thing sounds like it would be interesting to read sometime.
