 THOUGHTS ON SKEPTICS
IT SEEMS THAT THE MERE MENTION OF THE WORD "SKEPTIC" OFTEN MAKES PEOPLE ROLL THEIR EYES AND CURSE THE HEADACHE THEY FEEL STARTING TO GROW DEEP WITHIN THEIR NOGGIN. AT LEAST FOR MOST. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE WORD MAKES US FEEL SUCH ILL WILL TOWARDS THEM *GASPS*, THE SKETPICS?
IS IT BECAUSE THEY CHALLENEGE US TO THINK, TO REASON, OR IS IT SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY HAVE A DIFFERING VIEW? PERHAPS IT IS BECAUSE FOR SOME OF US THE WORD "BELIEF" IS NOTHING MORE THAN WORD, IT HAS LOST ALL MEANING. HAVE WE BECOME THAT LAZY THAT WE SIMPLY PICK A STANCE YET OFFER NO REASONING FOR BELIEVING SUCH AND BALK AT THE THOUGHT OF HAVING TO PRESENT THE HOWS AND WHY' S WHEN ASKED?
I KNOW MOST PEOPLE WILL SAY IT IS THE WAY IN WHICH THE IDEAS, WHEN OFFERED, ARE PRESENTED. THAT THE SKEPTIC COME OFF AS COCKY AND APPROACH SUBJECT MATTER IN A MOCKING TONE. TRUE THIS DOES HAPPEN.. BUT IT HAPPENS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE LINE. IT IS NOT A PROBLEM LIMITED TO SKEPTICAL VIEW ALONE. MAYBE THIS IS AN AREA EVERYONE NEEDS TO WORK ON. WE NEED TO REALIZE IT ISNT A PERSONAL ATTACK AND NOT ALL PEOPLE WHO HOLD OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS ARE OUT ON VENDETTAS AGAINST YOU IT IS MERELY A SHARING OF IDEAS, IF WE ALLOW IT TO BE.
SO RATHER THAN CURSE THE SKEPTIC WHEN CONFRONTED BY ONE, PERHAPS SHOULD THANK THEM. THEIR OPPOSING VIEWPOINT ALLOWS US TO STOP.. TAKE PAUSE AND REFLECT ON WHY IT IS WE BELIEVE/THINK THE WAY WE DO, RATHER THAN JUST SPOUT OFF A STANCE. THESE ENCOUNTERS ALSO GIVE EVERYONE A CHANCE TO STRENGTHEN THEIR BELIEF, OR IN RETROSPECT CHANGE IT(CHANGE ISNT A BAD THING).
TRUTH IS WE ARE ALL SKEPTICS.. WE ARE ALL BELIEVERS. SO IN CURSING THE "SKEPTIC" WE ONLY CURSE OURSELVES. WE SHOULD NOT ATTACK BUT RATHER EMBRACE THE SKEPTIC FOR CHALLENGING US.. FOR MAKING US THINK FOR MAKING US GROW IN OUR OWN BELIEF.

 Re: THOUGHTS ON SKEPTICS
I really don't care one way or another... I just get annoyed at people who are closed-minded. And I think that is exactly what "skeptics" are.... and you can be skeptic of anything, not just things paranormal. Example: I don't KNOW if there is a Heaven or Hell... it's hard to say for sure. I can't really come to a solid conclusion on that one... But then you have people like my friend Nikki ...she says there definitely is no God ... because in her opinion, if you can't see or hear something it doesn't exist! Very closed-minded!

 Re: THOUGHTS ON SKEPTICS
WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE PEOPLE SO OPEN MINDED THAT THEIR BRAINS FALL OUT?
BEING SKEPTICAL OF SOMETHING DOESNT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT ONE IS CLOSED MINDED ABOUT THE SUBJECT COMPLETELY... IT JUST MEANS THAT THE EXPLANATION GIVEN FOR (FILL IN THE BLANK) DOESNT MESH WITH THEIR VIEW OF THE WORLD. AND BEING SKEPTICAL DOESNT MEAN THAT GIVEN A NEW AND BETTER EXPLANATION THAT THEIR MIND WONT CHANGE (IT DOESNT MEAN THAT IT WILL EITHER). PEOPLE.. EVEN SKEPTICS CHANGE THEIR THINKING, THEIR IDEALS, THEIR BELIEFS ALL THE TIME.. EVEN LARGE ENTITIES SUCH AS SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY EXPERIENCE A CHANGE EVEN IF THEIR INITIAL STANCE COULD BE SEEN AS BEING SKEPTICAL (PARADIGM SHIFTS ANYONE?). BUT IN ORDER FOR THERE TO BE A CHANGE IN THOUGHT.. ONE HAS TO BE PRESENTED WITH AN EXPLANATION, A BETTER EXPLANATION, A MORE IN DEPTH EXPLANATION, ONE THAT FITS INTO HOW THEY VIEW THE WORLD.
AND YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT IN SAYING THAT YOU CAN BE SKEPTICAL OF ANYTHING.. EVEN YOU JEN ARE SKEPTICAL OF SOMETHING.. DOES THAT MEAN YOU ARE CLOSED MINDED? (NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN.. JUST GOING BY WHAT YOU SAID IN YOUR POST)

 Re: THOUGHTS ON SKEPTICS
Nope... I'm not closed-minded at all. If you take a closer look, I was pointing out the fact that I don't totally rule out certain things... I may not KNOW for a fact what is what .... but that is the point -- if I don't have proof one way or the other, I'm not ruling ANYTHING out.

 Re: THOUGHTS ON SKEPTICS
I have a friend who is completely skeptical of many things. Leyaminrai knows about whom I'm talking. He told us of a debate he had in debate class. He said the first thing he said when starting off, this isn´t verbatim, just from memory. "I'm not going to say that there isn´t a God or a Heaven because I lack the necessary proof to do so." Something like that. He´s the kind of skeptic that will not rule anything out. He´ll listen to whatever someone has to say, then he will point out what was wrong with what was said. Not all skeptics are close-minded. He wants you to try to prove him wrong, but he´s usually right. xD

 Re: THOUGHTS ON SKEPTICS
Being a skeptic is absolutly not about being closed minded. It is about questioning things.
A skeptic doesn't rule anything out. They just question it. Someone that is closed minded is not a skeptic. They flat out refuse to accept something.
That is the difference.
I actually like being arround skeptics. They cause me to actually think about something. And thinking is a good thing. It causes one to grow.
Hell, one of the VERY few people that I care about, is someone that causes me to really think about things. Not just fall back on what I think I know, but to actuall think. We try so hard to push ourselves, and each other, so that we can actuall learn something.
I personly consider myself a skeptic. I don't accept something at face value. One of my personal hero's was one (hint hint, he was one of if not the most talented occuultst that the world has ever seen, And wrote "the book of law"). And you really have to be a skeptic if you are a practicing occultist. Same with being intrested in the paranormal for that matter.

 Re: THOUGHTS ON SKEPTICS
Having them around just should make the "believers" more attentative to what they say, show, etc. because someone is just waiting to poke a hole in what is presented and yell "FAKE"

 Re: THOUGHTS ON SKEPTICS
I think little of skeptics, as I have more positive, constructive things to do. Most won't debate anything but use the "scream/yell" approach and then get insulting. Sorta like a Klan rally in Mississippi. If one can't debate the point with them they try being rude and obnoxious. Stretching the truth helps too, unless you are up-to-date on about anything interesting. I respect their right to speak their peace but few have peaceful approaches to get their points across.
